Ellen  Sullivan

(1842 – 7/9/1874)

Born in Rochester, NY

Death notice

I believe that this is the Ellen Sullivan from our family.

In the 1865 and 1870 census there were 4 Ellen Sullivan’s living in Auburn.  In the 1875 census there are 3 listed.   These 3 listed (not our Ellen) in 1875 appear in the 1865 and 1870 census….so they have lived in Auburn for some time and continue to be there in 1875.  Our Ellen Sullivan was missing and must be the one from the death notice above….thus her disappearance from the 1875 census.

Burial place unknown.  Probably the State Street / Cold Springs cemetery. State Street was the Catholic cemetery and opened in 1854…closed around 1880 when St. Josephs cemetery was opened.    There are no records for either cemetery…lost in fires.  There are inventory lists created for both cemeteries but these are based on headstones….and State Street was is such disarray…having been unmaintained and overgrown for a hundred years.

As I understand, the burial records for this cemetery were lost somewhere along the line.  In the 1960’s a group created a new roster based on the headstones.   So, if no headstone they wouldn’t be listed.   It is recognized that the current cemetery roster is incomplete.
